Discover Chillies

Tucked away at 14 Tattenham Cres, Epsom KT18 5QB, United Kingdom, Chillies is one of those neighbourhood spots you almost want to keep to yourself. Yet after a few visits-and several long conversations over sizzling plates and fragrant curries-it feels only fair to share why this place has become a firm favourite among locals in Epsom.

The first thing that strikes you when walking in is the aroma. There’s that unmistakable blend of toasted cumin, fresh coriander, and slow-cooked onions that instantly tells you the kitchen takes its craft seriously. As someone who has spent years exploring South Asian cuisine across Surrey and London, I’ve learned that flavour depth doesn’t come from heat alone; it comes from technique. At Chillies, you can taste the layering process-whole spices tempered in hot oil, masalas simmered patiently, and sauces reduced just enough to concentrate flavour without losing balance.

On my most recent visit, I ordered a classic chicken tikka masala alongside a lamb rogan josh and a basket of freshly baked naan. The chicken was tender and smoky from the tandoor, while the sauce had that rich tomato base rounded out with cream and fenugreek. According to the UK Food Standards Agency, proper temperature control and marination are key to both flavour and food safety in poultry dishes. Here, the texture and juiciness suggested the kitchen understands that balance well. The lamb, slow-cooked until it yielded at the touch of a fork, carried warm notes of cardamom and cloves without overwhelming the palate.

What sets this restaurant apart isn’t just flavour but consistency. I’ve visited on both quiet weekday evenings and busy weekend nights, and the quality hasn’t dipped. That kind of reliability is something diners often mention in reviews, and it reflects a disciplined kitchen process. In professional culinary practice, consistency comes from standardised recipes and careful portion control. You can tell the chefs here follow a structured method, ensuring that every curry, biryani, and tandoori dish tastes as it should.

The menu offers a wide range of options, from vegetarian staples like saag paneer and chana masala to seafood specials and house curries. For anyone exploring plant-based dining, it’s worth noting that the British Nutrition Foundation highlights legumes and leafy greens as valuable sources of fibre and protein. Dishes built around lentils, spinach, and chickpeas aren’t just flavourful; they’re nourishing too. I’ve tried the vegetable biryani here, and the grains were separate and fragrant, layered with spiced vegetables and served with cooling raita that balanced the warmth beautifully.

Location matters as well. Being situated in Epsom makes Chillies convenient for both residents and visitors heading to nearby attractions. Parking is generally manageable in the surrounding area, and the restaurant’s accessible setting adds to its appeal. The dining space itself is comfortable and welcoming, with attentive service that doesn’t feel rushed. On one occasion, I asked about the spice level of a house special, and the staff took the time to explain how they adjust heat by altering the proportion of fresh chillies rather than simply adding chilli powder. That small detail speaks volumes about their understanding of authentic preparation.

Food hygiene ratings and public health oversight in the UK are transparent, and restaurants in Surrey are subject to regular inspections. While diners should always check the most current rating through official channels, my experiences have reflected a clean, well-managed environment. Tables are promptly cleared, cutlery arrives polished, and takeaway orders are neatly packaged.

There’s also something to be said about atmosphere. The gentle hum of conversation, the clink of glasses, and the sight of steaming plates arriving at neighbouring tables create a relaxed but lively vibe. It feels equally suited for a casual weeknight dinner or a small family celebration. Over time, regular customers become familiar faces, and that sense of community adds warmth that no menu description can fully capture.

In a town filled with dining options, from cafés to contemporary eateries, Chillies stands out for delivering bold flavours, thoughtful service, and dependable quality. Whether you’re craving a comforting curry, freshly baked naan, or a full spread to share, this Epsom restaurant proves that careful preparation and genuine hospitality never go out of style.

  • Finally……… a decent Tandoori Mixed grill. But be warned, portions are big and I couldn’t finish it. Very tasty

  • 09/07/24 A midweek evening meal with a couple of old school friends. Main meal and side for between £20 to £30 per head with drinks. I have to say the food was very good and for the average diner who likes Indian cuisine designed for the western palate they won't be disappointed. Therefore it has to be five stars.
